About The Guild

The Columbus Artists’ Guild is a dynamic arts organization in Columbus, Georgia, and the Chattahoochee Valley area. We are an eclectic and inclusive group that aspires to promote the creation and appreciation of art for all the Valley citizens. Guild members represent all ages, ethnicities, cultures, and backgrounds. Members include artists of national recognition, as well as those who belong simply because they love art. As evidenced by the catalog of entries from our latest member exhibition (2019), the media and subject matter scope is truly amazing! More than 100 artists displayed 180 pieces of artwork. In addition to the time-honored media of oils, acrylics, watercolor, pencil, pastel, and charcoal, were stunning photographs and works in many media - wood and metal sculpture, fabric, pottery, and woodcarving.

The Artists’ Guild mission of increasing awareness and appreciation for the visual arts is embodied in promoting local artists and galleries and related shows, exhibitions, workshops, lectures, and other events. It also is apparent in our goal of unifying artists, institutions, galleries, and other artist groups. We strive to promote and publicize art events for all citizens. Our particular interest is to encourage younger artists and a continuing effort to engage art students and teachers in our schools. In line with this is the Guild’s Community Service Award, which is presented to individuals in the community, whether they are a guild member or not, who have shown vision and dedication in promoting art to everyone.

Our heritage sprang from an idea in 1950 by resident Betty Fielder Mitchell. She had the foresight of an organization that would be of common benefit and an opportunity to share ideas, work, and energy among local artisans. The endeavor was aided by the Christian Fellowship Association and was originally named the Columbus Art League. The “Artists’ Guild of Columbus,” Georgia, was incorporated in 1983 and received 501c3 non-profit status in 1985, allowing contributions to receive tax-deductible status. A Board of Directors and officers manages the Guild. Members are kept informed by periodic letters from the guild president as well as timely e-mails and the Guild's Facebook page.

Our organization meets once a month except for November. The December meeting usually is in conjunction with a Christmas party. Membership in the Guild exceeds 250, and meetings are generally attended by 50-100. There is a “social hour,” followed by a business meeting and an educational presentation by a featured artist.

Membership dues are very reasonable, and a recent (2021) initiative now offers a free first-year membership for new members.

Although many art organizations live with an undeserved reputation of being stuffy or select, the Columbus Artists’ Guild is anything but. Anyone may attend our meetings to see for themselves and are always welcome.
