Please join us in congratulating one of our long-time members Garry Pound for being among the 10 recipients of the 2024 Governor’s Awards for the Arts and Humanities. This is the 13th year the governor has presented the awards in partnership with the Georgia Council for the Arts and Georgia Humanities to honor people and organizations for significant contributions to the state in those fields.

Ledger-Enquirer News Article

As a painter, when I think of artists who create ceramics and pottery, I begin to think of those that strive for perfection. In fact, I think many people that are outside of this realm have the idea that ceramics are something that is exact, precise, and perfect. Many of us cannot fathom the idea of creating something seamless where others cannot perceive the struggles that went into making the object. Because of my wonder towards artists like this, whenever I am able to sit with a ceramic artist and delve into their craft with them, I make sure to take advantage of that opportunity.

Campbell Eubanks is one of these artists. Campbell is a senior Bachelor of Fine Arts student at Columbus State University with a concentration in ceramics. Many of our readers may already be familiar with both Campbell and her work. She is a prolific student within the art department at Columbus State, as well as an active member of the Columbus Artists’ Guild, and she frequently sells her work at her own booth at Market Days on Broadway. Her work has also been shown in different exhibits around the community such as Beyond Go-Figure at the Bartlett Center, the member’s exhibit at the Columbus Artists’ Guild, as well an exhibit that she curated herself, ‘Ceramics Throughout the Centuries’ at Columbus State.

Featured Artists Bucky Bowles

Artists’ Guild member Bucky Bowles was one of the featured artists yesterday afternoon June 3rd at the Spring Harbor event “A Walk Down Memory Lane.” A reception with delicious hors - d’oeuvres and wine, a program given by member Sally Gates and a review of the works of thirty-one Columbus artists in the Golden Gallery. The art is from collections of sixteen Spring Harbor residents. Bucky is a former president of the Guild.

Amy Patterson & Washington DC

Columbus Artists’ Guild member Amy Patterson is in the news!

She has two of her works in a national exhibit in Washington, DC at the Pen Arts Gallery.

They just notified her that one of them has been awarded an honorable mention. This is out of only eight awards given at the entire exhibit.

Congratulations Amy on your entry “Tea for Teal!”

GUILD MEMBER TO VISIT ARTIST IRIS SCOTT
IN NEW MEXICO

Guild member Adleyn Scott has been invited by our artist friend Iris Scott to visit her in Abiquiu, New Mexico, about an hour northwest of Santa Fe.

Adleyn is traveling in early May with her niece, Georgia Cosmah.

Iris is a renowned finger painting artist who has become a phenomenal success with her work and has been featured in over 30 magazines, including Forbes, Barrons, the Smithsonian, and others. She has many YouTube videos and one of them has exceeded 100 million views.

We first met Iris in mid-2014. Adleyn noticed one of her YouTube videos. She emailed Iris, not expecting to get an answer but she did, right away. That transpired into phone calls and a budding friendship. Adleyn then had a wild idea to ask her to come to Columbus to conduct a workshop in finger painting. It was a pipe dream against many odds and we had to duel with many “naysayers.” “It won’t work, we’ve never done it before, it is too expensive, no one will come, finger painting is for kindergartners, etc.” Over many twists and turns, we made it happen and the workshop was a huge success. Both classes were filled and a waiting list was created. People came from all over - Macon, Montgomery, Birmingham, Jackson, MS, Idaho, and even Canada and Mexico! It was held in the beautiful Columbus State University art studios in the historic Seaboard Coastline Railway building.

Besides getting to study with Iris, she and Georgia are looking forward to the adventure, the shopping, and the sightseeing.

Susan Culpepper Meets Ron Hicks

Artists’ Guild member Susan Culpepper will be attending a workshop in Scottsdale, Arizona in May.

It is being taught by artist Ron Hicks whose work is shown at Gallery 1261 in Denver, and Arcadia Gallery in New York City.

His painting is a marriage between figurative and abstract.

Although Susan is a very fine artist, she says she hopes to “glean a few nuggets of wisdom” from him.

Best wishes on your trip Susan! We can’t wait to hear all about it upon your return.

The Diversity of the Guild!

The Current Vice President of the Columbus Artists’ Guild is usually promoting the diversity that is the guild membership. Diversity in age, stage, level of talent, media, etc. and how the guild is a very welcoming and supportive group for ALL artists. So to express that diversity a list has been provided below of the various media used by Guild members along with an example image of one of the mediums, tempura eggwash!

 SIGs

(SPECIAL INTEREST GROUPS)

Steve Scott here (aka Mr. Adleyn), guild board member and current interim VP. I have an idea that I feel would create some energy in our guild as well as provide a resource for new members regarding their specific media interests - Special Interest Groups (SIG).

This would not be a formal structure but rather list of “go to” members of the guild who are passionate about their art and want to share and help others. I have started with a list of media representing areas our members have done in the past. Please review the list and offer your suggestions as to media and to guild members who may wish to be one of “subject matter experts” in that particular media.

We are looking at media types, rather than styles. Acrylic, Calligraphy, Charcoal, Coffee painting, Egg Tempera, Finger painting, Folk art, Glass (stained), Glass (fused), Illustration, Mixed media, Mosaics, Murals, Oil, Pastel, Pen, Pencil, Photograph, Portraiture, Poured paint, Sculpture, Tapestry, Three dimensional, Watercolor, Wood turning.

Please send your suggestions and comments (and contact info if you want to be a resource) to me at: stephenkylescott@gmail.com

Thank you!
