Located in state-of-the-art facilities in the historic riverfront area of the vibrant city of Columbus, the Department of Art offers rigorous programs of study that guide students toward becoming creative professionals in their field in Studio Art, Art Education, Graphic Design, Animation, or Art History. Students in Studio Art choose a focus in Book Arts and Printmaking, Ceramics, Narrative Illustration, Painting and Drawing, Photography, Sculpture and Expanded Media, Animation, or Graphic Design. Visiting artists and scholars are regularly in residence and lead workshops or teach courses in topics related to their artistic and scholarly work. Everything that is offered in the Department -- a rich selection of courses, exhibitions, in-depth critiques, workshops and lectures – is orchestrated to expose our gifted students to an incredibly rich array of different perspectives and creates an intense environment designed to foster future, successful careers for our graduates. The Department has earned full professional accreditation by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design.

Columbus High School, proudly known as a liberal arts magnet and the number 2 school in the state of Georgia, has a strong and rigorous art program. Students are offered 4 types of Advanced Placement art courses: AP Drawing, AP 2D Design, AP 3D Design, and AP Art History. For the last 2 years, we had a 100% pass rate in those courses. We also offer 3 other levels of art, all of which focus on skill-building in various media while encouraging creativity and conceptual voice. We believe that all students benefit from strong art education and the development of design thinking skills that can be applied to all aspects of their education. Our artists have been recognized and awarded locally, at the state level, regionally, and even nationally! Out of the 17 AP Visual Art students I taught this past year, 12 are planning to be art majors, both at universities and private art schools like Rhode Island School of Art and Design. The art program also offers an art club and the National Art Honor Society… we have 128 students in these organizations last year! This allows students who can’t fit art into their schedule to still find time to make art a priority in their lives.
I have been the art teacher at CHS for the past 3 years. I attended Mercer University, graduating with honors as a double major in Art Education. I have had the pleasure of teaching 14 years in various schools in Georgia. I have won several awards for teaching, most recently representing CHS as the Page One Teacher of the year. My favorite recognition has come from students…. STAR teacher and Most Influential Educator. Fun fact, I have had 9 previous art students go on to be art teachers, one is an art professor, and another is a curator at the Smithsonian! I create art myself. I enjoy painting and printmaking, but as a teacher that has to teach it all, I love exploring all mediums. Please feel free to reach me at brand.gretchen.l@muscogee.k12.ga.us if you are interested in collaborating with my amazing artists!
